Poetry Lesson

"What kind of lesson would you like to teach? A lesson about a current event or a lesson about poetry?"

"Poetry. Poetry, of course."

Well, the lesson is now written and waiting to be delivered to a class of twenty-five "diverse" seventh graders. I wonder, who are these "diverse" seventh graders? (This is how they are described in the thick packet the charter school sent to me to prepare me for my visit with them.) How will they respond? Will I be met with enthusiasm? After reading the poem I've chosen, will I be met with a sea of blank faces or hopefully, not?

What poems did I choose?

"Come to the Edge" by Guillaume Apollinaire
"Dreams" by Langston Hughes

I am both dreading and bubbling with anticipation about meeting with this charter and these students. Wish me luck.
